The rise and fall of Digital First; or, how to get rich plundering newspapers
by Dan Kennedy Boston, MA: The Nation recently published a splendid takedown of Randall Smith, a little-known Wall Street tycoon whose avarice has hollowed out daily newspapers from coast to coast. By “gutting” his papers, Julie Reynolds reports, Smith was able to amass the $57 million he needed to buy 16 mansions in Palm Beach, Florida. “Don’t just blame the Internet for journalism’s decline,” she writes. “Old-fashioned capitalist greed also strangles newspapers.” The name of Smith’s newspaper empire is Digital First Media, an ironic moniker for an enterprise dedicated to the proposition that every last penny should be squeezed out of the shrinking print…
John Henry’s Globe Disaster
via Boston Business Journal - Amid The Boston Globe’s efforts to overcome the embarrassing printing problems that have plagued it for the past three months are growing signs of employee anger aimed at top management. An anonymous flyer that’s reportedly been seen around the Globe’s offices in recent weeks (a copy of which was sent to the Business Journal) calls out Boston Globe Media owner John Henry by name and urges employees to stop him from “destroying” the daily newspaper and its workers. “After a series of missteps since acquiring the Boston Globe, a desperate John Henry is resorting to anti-worker tactics and now the company is…

John Henry’s Red Sox and Boston Globe Owner Printing Fake News on President Trump
Trenton, NJ: by Bill Spadea, NJ Radio - Fake news alert! The President is not on vacation! He’s out of the White House for 17 days, that’s true. But negotiating sanctions and economic policy while displaced from the HVAC work being done at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. is certainly not a vacation. The Boston Globe thought to run a pleasant article about the President’s so-called vacation and targeted the location as if that would be the last place on earth that anyone would take a vacation. Let’s just take at face value the premise that this is a vacation, which it clearly is not.…
NJ 101.5 RADIO Dennis Malloy — ” Hey Boston Globe…go (bleep) yourself “
Trenton, NJ: - The headline of a recent Boston Globe article reads “Forget scenic traditions — Trump vacations in the land of spray tans.” Never mind that they reduce a proud population of nearly 9 million people to the nonsense of a reality show that actually featured people from other states. These two geniuses — no doubt, open-minded, tolerant reporters from this elitist publication — offended a group that’s safe for these cowards to offend. We’re not a religious, ethnic or racial group, but 9 million people nonetheless, who deserve not to be slandered just because you try so “wicked haahd” to…

If you’re thinking you’d love to be a photojournalist, ask yourself if you would have choked ?
This is what Pulitzers are made of If you're thinking you'd love to be a photojournalist, ask yourself if you would have choked That's the advice Robert Scheer, photojournalist for the Indianapolis Star, gives after reading AP photographer Burhan Ozbilici's harrowing account of yesterday's assassination attempt of Russia's ambadassor to Turkey. Ozbilici captured the horrific event on camera, stating simply—and badassedly— "I composed myself enough to shoot pictures." AP photographer Burhan Ozbilici continued his work in the face of this. — Micah Grimes (@MicahGrimes) December 19, 2016 "Burhan Ozbilici, @AP photographer who saw this go down and lifted camera to make pictures, is a hero," …

Pipeline Riot charges against award-winning journalist dropped
North Dakota judge today refused to authorize riot charges against award-winning journalist Amy Goodman for her reporting on an attack against Native American-led anti-pipeline protesters. “This is a complete vindication of my right as a journalist to cover the attack on the protesters, and of the public’s right to know what is happening with the Dakota Access pipeline,” said Goodman. "We will continue to report on this epic struggle of Native Americans and their non-Native allies taking on the fossil fuel industry and an increasingly militarized police in this time when climate change threatens the planet."
